What changed—and what it means

A plain-language record of important Canadian immigration changes, program status and the official sources you should check before acting.

Last verified against official sources: 3 September 2026
Check the effective date, not only the headline. An announcement may describe a future change, a limited intake or a planning target rather than a program you can apply to. We summarize the practical point and link to the Government of Canada source for the full instructions.

Initiative

Canada announced an initiative to transition up to 33,000 workers to permanent residence

The 2026–2027 initiative focuses on eligible workers already contributing in smaller communities. IRCC said it would initially use existing application inventories and established economic programs. This is not a separate open application stream.

Fees changed

Permanent residence application fees increased

IRCC increased several permanent residence fees, including the right of permanent residence fee and fees for economic, business and family applications. Use IRCC’s current fee list before paying; an old checklist or article may show the previous amount.

Rule simplified

Eligible post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit

The 2026–2028 planning context

Canada’s current plan targets 380,000 permanent resident admissions in each of 2026, 2027 and 2028, while reducing new temporary resident arrivals. These are system-wide planning targets—not individual eligibility rules or a guarantee that a particular stream will stay open. Read the official levels plan.
