Australia Working Holiday Visa (417/462): Complete Guide (2026)

2–4 weeks processing 💰 AUD 650 visa fee 👶 18–30 (35) age limit 12 months stays (up to 3 yrs)
The short version The Australia Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) or Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) lets young travellers aged 18–30 (35 for some passports) live, travel, and work in Australia for 12 months. You can extend to a second and third year through regional work. Popular with Europeans, North Americans, and East Asians. It is not a PR pathway but is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to live in Australia short-term.

What is the Working Holiday Visa?

Each year, Australia issues over 150,000 Working Holiday Visas (WHV) to young travellers from nearly 50 eligible countries. The visa is designed for a “cultural exchange” — experience Australia while supporting yourself through casual work. You can work for any employer, take internships, study for up to 4 months, and travel throughout the country.

Most WHV holders work in hospitality, farm labour, tourism, or retail. Skilled workers (engineers, nurses, IT professionals) can also use the visa to explore Australia and test the job market before committing to longer-term skilled migration.

Two subclasses exist: 417 for “Working Holiday” (about 19 countries including UK, Germany, France, Canada, most EU, Japan, Korea, Taiwan); 462 for “Work and Holiday” (about 30 countries including USA, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Vietnam). Rules are similar with minor differences.

Who qualifies

Age, nationality, and clean records are the main gates:

✅ Eligibility checklist

  • Age: 18 at time of application, not yet turned 31 (35 for UK, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Denmark). Age cap is strict.
  • Eligible nationality: Must hold a passport from one of the eligible countries. List on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
  • No dependent children accompanying: Children are not allowed on WHV. If you have children, you cannot bring them.
  • Financial capacity: Access to at least AUD 5,000 for living expenses, plus funds for return airfare (or airfare booked).
  • Health and character: Meet Australian health standards (medical exam may be required from certain countries). No criminal record.
  • Previous WHV use: Cannot apply for another first WHV if you have previously held one. Second and third WHVs require regional work from the first/second.

Watch out Working holiday workers are frequent targets of wage theft in Australia — particularly in farm work, fruit picking, and some hospitality. The Fair Work Ombudsman website has clear wage rates. Never accept under-the-table cash work without super (superannuation) contributions. Report exploitation — WHV holders have full rights to minimum wage and super.

Timeline from start to arrival

  • Month 1: Check eligibility; prepare finances (AUD 5,000+)
  • Month 1: Submit online application
  • Month 1–2: Visa decision (2–4 weeks)
  • Month 2–12: Enter Australia within 12 months of visa grant
  • Month 3–12 of stay: Optional: regional work for 2nd-year extension

Very fast turnaround: you can go from deciding to apply to being in Australia in 1–3 months. By design, this visa is responsive and accessible.

Do I need a lawyer?

WHV is designed for self-application. Almost nobody uses lawyers for this — the process is genuinely straightforward.

You might want a licensed immigration professional in these cases:

  • Prior Australian refusals or overstays
  • Criminal record (even minor — DUI, drug possession)
  • Previous WHV was refused
  • Complex health history
  • Nationality edge cases (multi-citizenship with one non-eligible passport)

If you have any prior visa refusal or criminal history, consult a registered migration agent (MARA) before applying — WHV refusals can be avoided with proper preparation.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay?

12 months on first WHV, with option to extend for second year (12 more months) after completing 3 months of specified regional work, and third year (12 more months) after 6 months of regional work during second WHV. Maximum 36 months total across 3 separate grants.

What is “regional work” for extensions?

Work in Australian Government-specified regional areas in industries including agriculture, tourism, hospitality, aged care, childcare, and construction. Specific postcodes listed on the immi website. Farm work (fruit picking, pruning) is the classic route.

Can I change jobs on a WHV?

Yes, unlimited. You can work for multiple employers. Maximum 6 months with any single employer on the first WHV (rule change 2019). Second/third WHV holders have no single-employer cap.

Can I study on a WHV?

Up to 4 months of study. Useful for short courses (language, diving certification, hospitality) but not for degree programs.

Can I extend to a work visa without leaving?

Yes. Apply for Subclass 482 TSS (employer-sponsored), 189/190/491 (skilled migration), or other visas while on WHV. Many use WHV as a way to find an Australian employer willing to sponsor them.

What about the 417 vs 462 difference?

417 (Working Holiday) = partner countries with reciprocal agreements (mostly Western European, Canadian, Japanese, Korean passports). 462 (Work and Holiday) = partner countries with more recent agreements (US, Brazil, India, Indonesia, etc.). 462 has a higher education requirement (some secondary + functional English) and limited annual numbers (quota per country).

Can I get PR from a WHV?

Not directly. You must transition to another visa (skilled migration, partner, employer-sponsored). Many use WHV as a testing ground for life in Australia and a launchpad for a longer-term visa.

What if I overstay?

Overstaying breaches visa conditions. Consequences: removal, 3-year re-entry ban, complications for all future Australian visas. Always apply for extensions before visa expiry.
